Madeira Levada Trek

Ancient water channels. Subtropical forest. Volcanic peaks above the clouds. Madeira — walking like nowhere else on earth.

Trip Overview

Follow ancient irrigation channels through lush laurel forest and volcanic landscape on this stunning island trail. Madeira's levada system — a network of water channels dating back centuries — provides some of the most unique and accessible walking in Europe, threading through terrain that ranges from subtropical forest to dramatic mountain peaks. Over six days you'll walk along narrow channels carved into cliffsides, through tunnels, past waterfalls, and above cloud-level ridges. The walking is never extreme — the levadas maintain a gentle gradient by design — but the scenery is extraordinary. Evenings are spent in characterful Madeiran hotels with incredible local food and wine.

Who is this for?

Moderate

An ideal trek for walkers of moderate fitness. The levada paths are well-maintained and gradual. Some sections have steep drops to one side, so a reasonable head for heights is helpful. No technical climbing required.

Easy — No experience needed
Moderate — Some fitness required
Challenging — Good fitness essential
Extreme — Very high fitness required

Good walking shoes, waterproof jacket, and a head torch (for tunnels).
Incredible. Madeiran cuisine is a highlight — fresh fish, espetada, and local wine.

"This was my first time cycling with Adventure Cafe; first time riding from London to Paris and my first time riding this sort of distance over 3 days. Lots of preparation had gone into this from AC prior to departing London."
